Pulmonologist Dr. Daniel Dilling of Loyola University Medical Center, a PFF Care Center site, explains that hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is the subgroup of interstitial lung disease that results from the lungs’ reaction to an inhaled organic particle or antigen. This reaction can be inflammatory, fibrotic, or a combination of both.

Autoimmune conditions is a subgroup of interstitial lung disease. Those most commonly associated with this subgroup of ILDs are rheumatoid arthritis, systemic sclerosis, dermatomyositis or polymyositis, lupus,,and Sjögren’s syndrome. Autoimmune diseases commonly associated with lung disease can also be referred to as connective tissue disease.
