Putting a face to the science: living with scleroderma-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD)

After Donna was diagnosed with SSc-ILD, her physician suggested enrolling inan upcoming clinical trial. Driven by trust in her physician and a commitment toadvancing science, Donna decided to participate in a clinical trial after carefullyweighing its pros and cons with her husband.
Donna dedicated five and a half years to the initial clinical trial and its follow-up study. She credits the study medication with slowing down her lung fibrosis, which further enabled her to watch her two sons growing up, travel, enjoy bird watching, and spend dinners with friends. Furthermore, Donna’s clinical trial experiences left her with more knowledge to make decisions for her own healthcare, a stronger bond with her medical team, and the confidence to engage directly with researchers and health leaders.

Positive results from Phase 1b IPF study
In July 2026, MannKind announced its phase 1b INFLO-1 study met its primary endpoint, which evaluated the use of nintedanib dry powder inhalation (DPI) (MNKD-201) in IPF. A primary endpoint is a key measurement researchers use to determine the efficacy of a medication or intervention. The study demonstrated that individuals with IPF who took nintedanib DPI had no serious adverse events. Reported cough events were predominantly mild, brief, and resolved.
Nintedanib DPI carries the medication deep into the airways when it’s inhaled, which is thought to permit the drug to directly reach and target the lung damage and scarring areas.
