September 2026 clinical trial highlights

by Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation
September 30, 2026

Research study participants are essential in the quest for new treatments and a cure for pulmonary fibrosis (PF).

Each month, we'll highlight a few of the many trials enrolling volunteers. All past issues are available on the PFF Clinical Trials Blog. To view more trials for various forms of interstitial lung disease (ILD), visit the đź”Ť  PFF Clinical Trial Finder.

Putting a face to the science: living with IPF

Steve noticed his lack of energy and continuous coughing. After living with these symptoms for one year, Steve was referred to a pulmonologist and underwent tests across three months to determine the root cause. After receiving his IPF diagnosis, Steve’s desire to contribute to the IPF community, and belief that clinical trial participants are essential to advancing research led him to participate in two clinical trials.

In the first study, Steve received a placebo. A placebo looks like medicine but has no active ingredients in it. A study that includes volunteers who receive the drug and another group who receive the placebo is an important way for researchers to measure how well the new drug will work. If you’re part of a trial that uses placebos, you won’t know which group you’re in, but you’ll be closely monitored throughout the study, even if you’re receiving a placebo.

The second study Steve participated in was discontinued. Researchers can still collect critical information even if a study ends earlier than expected. This is an essential part of the scientific discovery process and contributes toward the broader body of research.

Steve was inspired by the opportunity to advance the standard of care. He encourages others to get involved in research in similar ways.

Phase 2 PH-ILD study meets its primary endpoint

In September 2026, Pulmovant, Inc. announced its phase 2 PH-ILD study, PHocus, met its primary endpoint. A primary endpoint is the measurement that researchers use to determine if a medication or other intervention works as

              intended.

The study demonstrated a greater reduction in pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) in patients taking mosliciguat compared to placebo. PVR is the resistance that the blood has to overcome to flow through the blood vessels in the lungs.

Pulmovant will continue to evaluate mosliciguat as treatment in PH-ILD in the phase 3 PHrontier clinical trial.

The trial achieving its endpoint marks a significant development in advancing care for patients living with PH-ILD and demonstrates the importance of research studies which support the development of new therapies.

The FDA grants LTI-03 Fast Track designation for IPF

In August 2026, Rein Therapeutics, Inc. announced the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted Fast Track designation to LTI-03. This designation is designed to advance the development and review of drugs which treat serious conditions to fill unmet medical needs. The purpose is to get important new drugs to patients earlier.

Rein Therapeutics is assessing the inhaled drug, LTI-03, to determine its efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics — the study of how the body interacts with the treatment for the entire duration of exposure — in participants with IPF.
