In May of 2011 my father died from complications associated with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). I also have pulmonary fibrosis (PF), most likely a familial variant of IPF.  My disease is not moving as quickly as Dad’s, but it is progressing. I am at the point now where I am being considered for a lung transplant. One thing I have learned during my intimate journey with this disease is that outside of the fact that there is no cure, there is also not much in the way of knowledge about this disease. A quick web search finds that “IPF affects about 128,100 people in the United States, with about 48,000 new cases diagnosed annually. 40,000 people die each year to IPF, the same as to breast cancer.”

As many people die from IPF each year as breast cancer, yet no one knows about it. Even in the medical fields, little is known about how to treat and care for the PF patient.

The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (PFF) is working to change this. The PFF works to help educate patients, the public and the medical field about Pulmonary Fibrosis. The PFF is also developing the PFF Care Center Network, an expanding group of medical centers nationwide that have proven experience and expertise in treating patients with fibrotic lung diseases. This is very important and vital work that deserves our support.

The PFF also helps with clinical trials that attempt to find a treatment for this disease. My disease is familial and I am very worried about my children and my grandchildren.

Please join me in supporting the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation at our Wine Tasting being hosted on September 13th at 3pm.
