Molly's Run for Lungs
Running to fight Pulmonary Fibrosis
Pulmonary Fibrosis involves scarring of the lung. Gradually, the air sacs of the lungs become replaced by fibrotic tissue. When the scar forms, the tissue becomes thicker causing an irreversible loss of the tissue’s ability to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream. 5 million people worldwide suffer form this disease. 40,000 Americans expire each year from Pulmonary Fibrosis, which is the same number that die form breast cancer annually. My own family has been effected by Pulmonary Fibrosis. My uncle, Doug, passed away in February of 2007 from IPF (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis), and both my Dad, Bob, and my aunt, Nancy, were diagnosed shortly after Doug's death. The causes of their diagnoses are unknown, yet there is growing evidence that suggests a genetic predisposition. In hopes of increasing awareness, advocating for increased legislation for research, and raising funds to support research, I am training for the Twin Cities Marathon this October. Please help me by donating what you can, by writing your senators and congressmen, and by taking some time to spread awareness about Pulmonary fibrosis.
