The Newport and Walt Disney World Marathons

  • Dates: 11 Oct, 2015
  • Location: Newport, Rhode Island, United States of America

Hi everyone,

For those who may not have heard, I've traded in the weights for running sneakers. That’s right: yours truly is signed up for not one, but two, marathons over the next six months; The Newport Marathon in Rhode Island (October 11th) and the Walt Disney World Marathon in Florida (January 10th). I’m sure the obvious question on everyone’s mind (especially those that know me well) is probably “ok, why?” The answer is quite simple: to make a difference; a difference for the almost 130,000 people currently living with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in the United States, and the thousands more who are diagnosed every year.

I am sure many of you may never have even heard of IPF. I sure didn’t know what it was until last year when a very important person in my life was diagnosed with IPF. Quite simply, IPF is awful. It is a disease that is statistically more common than Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and has the same mortality rate as breast cancer. However, no one hears much about IPF, and the research aimed at finding its cure receives only a fraction of the funding as those of other causes. For more detail on IPF and its impact, you can click here.

I’m not running for any kind of personal accolades. My only goal is to do my part in the fight against pulmonary fibrosis and run for all of those who can’t. I am running in support of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (PFF) and attempting to raise both money and awareness for IPF and all types of pulmonary fibrosis with these marathons…and I need your help. A small donation for every mile I run will go a long way in support of IPF research. To make a safe and secure contribution to my efforts please visit my First Giving page.

I’m not part of any IPF fundraising team. I have no minimum quotas or any other required fundraising benchmarks. Every effort will go to support the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. If all you can spare is a quarter per mile ($0.25 x 52.4 = $13.10), it will be graciously accepted. Every last bit helps. I’d also ask that you share this link with everyone you know.

For those of you who are creative or fond of a “friendly wagers,” I’m am also open to your total donation being contingent on my total combined times or performance from the first marathon to the second, or something creative like that; anything to up the ante!

Thank you all in advance for your generosity and support. I wish you all flat roads traveled!

Best wishes,
Kevin
