Bank of American Chicago Marathon benefiting the PFF

I am running the 2014 Bank of America Chicago Marathon in loving memory of the most wonderful woman I have ever known. A person who always put others needs in front of her own. The best daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend anyone could ask for. She died way too soon in a manner that robbed her of her energy, her independence and her ability to enjoy her family and friends. Her name is Myrna Leibovitz and she was my mother, my heart and my families foundation.

She passed away 5+ years ago from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a very rare disease that attacks the lungs and made each and every breath she took more difficult then the last.

For 3 years, she fought to stay with us with no real chance to survive. We learned early on that there wasn't much hope in the form of promising treatments to help heal her and the options available to ease her discomfort and keep her from suffocating were minimal at best. It was a heartbreaking period for her entire family and a time that was spent in isolation dare she let anyone of her friends see her in this extremely feeble state. It was a sad foreshadowing of her own destiny that her sister Edith Greenfield died from the same horrendous disease years earlier.

The saddest part is when you learn very quickly that there have been few breakthroughs and scarce funding that would allow for research that could start a FOUNDATION of HOPE for people stricken with this horrible disease.

I am going to work hard to help fund research that hopefully will lead to better treatments that can ease the struggle that patients with IPF have and extend the lives of others the way I prayed every minute of every day that my mother Myrna Leibovitz' life would be.

My mother always told me that there is no greater gift than the gift of helping others. It saddens me that I could not help her in the most difficult of times but in her honor, I am hoping you will join me in giving THE GIFT of HOPE to those people stricken with IPF and their families whose hearts are aching because their loved one is struggling every minute for another breath of life.

Thank you very much for sponsoring me with your donation to my safe and secure First Givingpage. Words cannot express the gratitude I have for you who care enough to want to help others in need and your donation honors the most special of people, my mother Myrna Leibovitz. ThePulmonary Fibrosis Foundation is so thankful for you kindness.

Sincerely,
Gary Leibovitz
