We are excited host our 2nd Annual Tom Rutledge Memorial Ready, Set, Breathe Fun Run and 5K at North Bossier Park in Bossier City, Louisiana on May 31, 2014 at 8:00 a.m.

This run will benefit the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Tom was a Supervisor for Bossier Parks and Recreation until his death in May of 2012. Tom was also a dedicated coach for many years and served as a Hunter Education Instructor.

Tom was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in September of 2011. He received a double lung transplant (the only life prolonging treatment for IPF victims) in March of 2012. Tom fought valiantly but succumbed to complications in May of 2012.

Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF) is a condition in which the lung tissue becomes thickened, stiff and scarred. As lung tissue becomes scarred and thicker, it is more difficult for the lungs to transfer oxygen into the bloodstream. As a result, the brain, heart, and other organs do not get the oxygen they need to function properly. In some cases, doctors can determine the cause of the fibrosis (scarring), but in many cases the cause remains unknown. When there is no known cause for the development of pulmonary fibrosis, the disease is called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

In the United States, IPF affects between 132,000-200,000 people and an estimated 50,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. To date, there is no FDA-approved treatment or cure for IPF. Sadly, an estimated 40,000 people die each year from PF.

The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation’s mission is to help find a cure for IPF, advocate for the PF community, promote disease awareness, and provide a compassionate environment for patients and their families.

It is our goal to begin a tradition of raising funds to help fight this awful disease so that no other family loses their PawPaw too soon.
